Healthy School Snacks

I go to all of TT7’s school parties, and I applaud parents for being involved and sending in snacks. But it’s sad to see boxes of cookies & cupcakes arrive that the KIDS don’t even want to eat. They go on their plates then straight in the trash. I’m talking about the boxed, mass-produced items found in the bakery section of the grocery store. They change the design and colors to match the current holiday so they look cute, but they taste horrible and are even worse for you. But as a busy Mom it’s easy to toss them in the cart so we can check “buy school snack” off our list.

Here’s my challenge: The next time your kid needs to take a treat for school, send something yummy- but healthy.

Kids get incredibly excited over fruit- grapes, watermelon, pineapple, blueberries, strawberries. Bonus: add fat-free whipped cream and a few sprinkles.
A bag of low-fat cheese squares with cute toothpicks.
PB&J sandwiches cut with cookie cutters.
Sugar-free jello cups or ice pops.

These items may cost a little more and have a 5-15 minute prep time, but isn’t it worth it? You get to be the “fun Mom” and the class gets to eat healthy!

  1. Dena this is a great idea, but some schools don't allow parents to make snacks (anything homemade). Oceanway Elem. for example only allowed store bought prepackaged goods, nothing could be opened. Which I find terrible because there are not may healthy prepackaged options. Any ideas for moms dealing with this?

Oh and I LOVE reading your blog :) Keep up the good work!!

  2. I love the idea of sprinkles with the whipped cream!!!! I may steal that to make my OWN snacks more interesting. :-)
